Research interests:

My research interests in the field of geoarchaeology are mainly in an assessment of the scientific knowledge present in the ancient world in the fields of engineering, geology, mathematics and hydrology. More specifically, I study the construction, maintenance and functioning of ancient water supply systems, water lifting machines and watermills (in collaboration with Gül Sürmelihindi); the operation of roman water stone saws; reconstruction of ancient technology; and geological understanding in the ancient world

  • 1984 - 1993 Lecturer in Structural Geology (geometry and kinematics) at Utrecht University, The Netherlands
  • 1993 - 1999 Professor in Tectonophysics and Structural Geology at the Department of Earth Sciences of Mainz University, Germany
  • 1999-present Senior Research Professor in Geoarchaeology
